Nation-building: Difficult Choices, Sustained Effort, and a Vision for the Future.

One thing Rwanda’s journey since 1994 continues to teach me is the importance of seeing beyond the immediate moment, connecting the dots between decisions, and understanding how today’s actions contribute to a much bigger vision.

I still remember a jingle from the years following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, warning people about landmines and how to stay safe.

From Gacaca to public health campaigns during COVID-19, public awareness has been one of many instruments used to inform, protect and mobilise communities.

Campaigns have specific purposes. They do not replace the hard work happening in offices, negotiation rooms, institutions and communities, or out in the field every day.

Rwanda’s reconstruction has required addressing immediate needs while planning for generations to come.

From women’s representation and environmental protection to mountain gorilla conservation and drones delivering lifesaving blood to remote communities, these choices reflect a long-term vision that places human life, and dignity, at the centre of development.

That same commitment extends to safety and security, particularly in a post-genocide society still facing threats to its security, and social cohesion.

But safety also means protecting our physical and mental well-being.

Mental health practitioners are raising concerns about addiction and deeper societal pressures. I sometimes wonder whether the extraordinary resilience that helped us survive and rebuild has also meant carrying unresolved pain, and whether some of that pain is becoming more visible in younger generations, alongside challenges unique to their time.

This is why excessive alcohol consumption, drug abuse and other addictions cannot be taken lightly.

Government cannot address these challenges alone. Civil society, families, educators, faith communities and businesses must also take responsibility for creating environments in which families and young people feel supported, valued and empowered.

Public awareness campaigns must therefore be continuously evaluated, and tailored to their objectives. But their visibility should never be mistaken for the totality of the work behind them.

Nation-building also requires us to cultivate a habit of looking beyond what immediately meets the eye: seeking context, connecting the dots and exercising critical thinking before drawing conclusions.

Ultimately, a people-centred approach to governance must go hand in hand with a society that takes responsibility for one another.

How Will Rwanda Spend the 2026/2027 Budget?

Rwanda’s 2026/2027 national budget amounts to FRW 7,796.3 billion, reflecting the country’s continued commitment to economic growth, improved service delivery, and sustainable development.

Under the Second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), the budget is distributed across three key priorities:
Economic Transformation: FRW 4,900.9 billion (62.86%) to drive economic growth and strengthen productive sectors.
Social Transformation: FRW 1,711.3 billion (21.95%) to improve citizens’ well-being and support social development.
Transformational Governance: FRW 1,184.1 billion (15.19%) to strengthen institutions and promote effective governance.
Of the total budget, 61% (FRW 4,785.5 billion) is allocated to recurrent spending, including salaries and other government expenditures, while 39% (FRW 3,010.8 billion) is dedicated to capital investment, supporting infrastructure development and investment in productive sectors.

The budget reflects Rwanda’s ambition to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economy while improving the quality of life of its citizen.

Every citizen has a role to play! Public participation, monitoring government programmes, and promoting accountability are essential to ensuring that public resources deliver meaningful results for all Rwandans.
Together, let us contribute to building a prosperous Rwanda that leaves no one behind. 🇷🇼

Nurses/midwives regret the statement of @PaulGitwaza during preaching @ZionTempleCC on 7th 08 2026 dishonoring our profession. We thank this apology step after we met yesterday and looking forward to more steps ahead. @RNMU1, @RwandaHealth, @nsanzimanasabin. @RwandaLocalGov.

APOTRE GITWAZA CALLED OUR NURSES & MIDWIVES #WITCHES AND #SORCERERS:

This should not go down easily through an apology; Apotre Gitwaza made such blasphemy in 4k VIDEO, he needs to make a real apology using the same media (4K VIDEO), else, the writing is not an apology enough.

Africa’s future must be shaped by Africans, driven by African ambition, and sustained by African solutions.

President #PaulKagame has consistently championed this Pan-African vision, advocating for a continent that harnesses its own resources, expertise, and human capital to determine its destiny.

From advancing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and greater visa openness to championing the revitalization of the African Union Peace Fund, his continental leadership has emphasized economic integration, self-reliance, peace, and collective responsibility.

The message is clear: Africa must move beyond dependency, take ownership of its challenges, and build its future on its own terms.

African Solutions to African Problems is not merely a slogan. It is a call for action, ownership, and lasting transformation.

A Kigali moto-taxi rider covers around 200 kilometres a day.

Ampersand’s answer was to stop charging batteries and start swapping them in about three minutes, faster than filling a petrol tank.

🛵💰 Ampersand reports that a rider switching from petrol can meaningfully increase take-home earnings, with savings running to several hundred dollars a year.
