Insane footnote of the AIDS Epidemic: viaticals. Gay men facing [at the time] a death sentence sold their life insurance policies to investors for cash, then (as the media would have you believe) went on a bender.
Some reportedly got 70-80 cents on the dollar; that's how certain near death was. There was even a publicly traded company, Dignity Partners (lol) focused on this.
Plot twist: HIV treatments advanced fast enough to ruin the returns; Dignity Partners stock collapsed in 96/97.

girls, this is the perfect way to say “ur mine” to that anthropic researcher you’re trying to pull out of his polycule pre-IPO

the greatest minds of our generation have had enough time away from ads. it’s time to return all these “researchers” back to where they belong: ads. there is no greater alignment than shareholder value.
the children yearn for the mines.

Luckily, it didn't get to that." 😅

lowkey the real way gen pop will use their Muse is for the IG integration and that’s why it can win.
fai nur@faionur · Sep 21muse would get 100m dau in 1 day and win the US market if meta launched an ad showing muse checking who unfollowed you on instagram

Josh was my first mentor when I came to the valley. This clip in particular was inspired by him and seeing him operate. So grateful @joshelman and excited to see him back in the Arena.

It was only as the Roman Empire crumbled when celebratory and artistic spaces such as the theaters at Messene and Chersonesos were turned into quarries.
tobi lutke@tobi · Sep 18Our house in Toronto had this fancy glassed wine cellar, but we are not big wine drinkers.
Anyways, it had good climate control so here is my rack cellar.

Fireside Alpha@firesidealpha · Sep 17OpenAI's Noam Brown says air-gapping the computers may not stop a misaligned AI, because two air-gapped machines can still talk by running a CPU hot and reading the temperature change
"But I think the major takeaway from the incident is that people underestimated the AI. And we never want to be in a situation again where we underestimate the AI. It's a weird world, because AI progress is so fast that people are consistently underestimating the AI."
"So to be in a situation where you don't underestimate it again, when it comes to safety and alignment, you have to have a very, very, very high bar."
"You could even go as far as to say, "Well, we should air gap the computers." And I'm not convinced that that would be sufficient."
"There are studies, and this is mostly academic, where you can have two computers next to each other that are air-gapped and they're still able to communicate with each other because they have temperature sensors."
"One of them is able to run their CPU really hot, and then the other one can actually detect the temperature change, and then that actually gives them a mechanism to communicate."

“There's about a million years of evolution between you and me." — banking that line for a future performance review.
Trung Phan@TrungTPhan · Sep 16Jensen masterfully handles the potential Benioff frame-mog:
“Look, I'm very good friends with both of you guys…I always feel like I need to stand on a chair…I just wanna let you guys know that when I'm on an airplane, I'm a lot more comfortable than you guys. And so, through human evolution, they realized that big is unnecessary. There's about a million years of evolution between you and me."

Anthropic’s S-1 is gonna be like, “we will create machine super intelligence that will threaten humanities existence; the TAM for B2B SaaS is nearly infinite.”
Evan Hubinger@EvanHub · Sep 9Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

When Doug Leone slices onions, the onions cry.
dnap@dnapway · Aug 30Sequoia partner Doug Leone reveals he got a root canal with no Novocaine to see if he was really a badass
"I had to get a root canal. And I had to go to a meeting right after that. I told the dentist, drill without any Novocaine.”
“My whole life, I wanted to see if I was a badass or not. Am I a fake badass that has this envelope nobody could tell, or am I really a badass on the inside?"
"He drilled and I jumped. And I told the dentist, I won't move again. And I didn't move again. I used the trick of thinking what it must be like to go to war and lose an arm or two legs. That's pain with consequences. Mine was pain with no consequences."
“It’s just nerve endings from there to my brain to my spine, f*ck it I’m not moving.”
"I had to go home and change my shirt because I was a puddle of sweat. But I didn't move. And so I love fear. It does wonders for me."
