"Surely even a daringly uneven talent shouldn’t be permitted as many cliches as Carson is?" - Me on Anne Carson, in @poetrymagazine. See below.

How cool: I ordered the new Bruce Taylor book, We Drove All Day for This: New and Selected Poems, only to discover something I once said about Taylor on the back cover! I vaguely remember writing this…somewhere. But it’s true. Certainly Taylor’s my favourite living poet.

"We need A.I. cops," says a @nytopinion writer today. @GreatDismal imagined these in his 1984 novel Neuromancer. The A.I. cops were called Turing.

"I have come to envy men among my contemporaries who have no interest in sports. I envy them the time they have saved...Some of the teams I have followed...are now in rebuilding mode. At nearly 90, I am too old to await their rebuilding." -Joseph Epstein in @Commentary

There's an excerpt from my new verse novel in the latest issue of @newversereview. (It's about an AI gone rogue.)
Many thanks to @StevenEKnepper, who has created an essential new poetry magazine (one of the very best around, really) in a very short span of time.

Wish I'd written these couplets:
"Is it wrong to wonder if Yeats or James
Would ever have soared to single names
Without some thrust from the rocket packs
Affixed by fortune to their backs?"

The final lines of this new @danbpoet poem in @thedarkhorsemag are devastating:
"Here's to my having walked away from them
However lost I am."

I recently wrote a verse novel in which an AI has destroyed all original physical comic artwork. See the link below for an excerpt.
Hedgie@HedgieMarkets · Jul 27🦔AI companies are bulk-buying rare books, scanning them through high-speed machines that cut the spines off, and shredding the originals. A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world."
My Take
This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.
ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation."
I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate.
"We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline.

One of my very favourite contemporary poets, Daniel Brown, is on X! Please follow him at @danbpoet--and spread the word. Dan's poems are exquisite; I'll link to one of his masterpieces below as well as an interview I did with him some years ago.

After many years of writing for online publications, it's very cool to have two pieces in physical magazines on the newsstand right now (or, at least, the newsstand at @BookCityTO). An essay in @thewalrus and a comic-strip in @CNandQ. Long live physical media!

Enough about the Odyssey. When is Terry Gilliam gonna start filming Byron's Don Juan?

The word "transgressive" was already dead twenty years ago. Here's the poet Kay Ryan in 2005: "The word transgressive is thick upon the ground here at AWP... It’s funny how writers will all want to jump on the same bed till the springs pop out. Then they go jump on another one."
A.V. Marraccini@saintsoftness · Jul 14I’m seeing a lot of posts about “transgressive” literature and I’m genuinely trying to figure out what that means. What taboo is it still possible to transgress in a way that is meaningful in a society where taboo itself is taboo? Does transgression invert or become obsolete?
