In collaboration with the @francesarnold and @pengliu_group research groups, we @GoogleDeepMind are proud to release AlphaProtein Novo, a pipeline for small-molecule enzyme design.

We developed AlphaProtein Novo on a few standard model reactions, and validated designs in our own wet lab. We then wanted to challenge this system against nascent chemistries, so we asked leading scientists in biocatalysis whether we could partner on the reactions they cared about.

I am moved by his musings on whether anything we do actually matters. I liked his description of looking out on the crowd with the flickering candles after he's won the Nobel Peace Prize.

@DorsaSadigh, @percyliang, and @PangWeiKoh were nice enough to invite me to give a guest lecture in Stanford's AI class, and I concluded by trying to persuade students to make the world a better place (see attached text) (1/4).

A few years after I completed SLE, when I was 21 or so, they asked me to give a speech at the SLE banquet, and I thought I'd post that as a tribute to Mancall and what he built. Later, I adapted this into my essay for graduate fellowships, and I believe it still.

I wrote a blog post about why we need to define and pursue our own agenda for deep learning as computational biologists, instead of relying on methods from mainstream computer science - we have questions that are just not priorities in the mainstream!

Automatic differentiation collapses the linearized computational graph to compute a Jacobian. We don’t need exact gradients for SGD, so let’s use cheap Monte Carlo estimators instead: arxiv.org/abs/2007.10412
