"Energy Capacity = Economic Capacity"

Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger on why America's power grid is the ceiling on growth:

"We went through 10 to 15 years where essentially I was taking coal offline at the rate I was adding renewables, and essentially the nation was flatlined in terms of overall energy capacity."

"So essentially our economic capacity as a nation, flat for fifteen years."

"Even with that, we've gone to maybe increasing our national energy capacity 4% per year. Going from essentially zero to one."

"Nuclear as base load is a fabulous thing that we want to go build more of. Unfortunately all of our renewables have deep dependencies in China."

"Energy capacity somewhat dampens how euphoric we can get on AI. Why build a new data center and buy the million GPUs if I can't power them?"

I don’t normally write these things. But this one hits a bit different. Nearly three years ago I told a16z I wanted to spend part time outside the firm helping @drfeifei start and build a frontier model company. And what followed were some of the most remarkable moments of my career. From being at the founding table. To watching the first git commits. Seeing the very early very rough results that hinted at something much greater. Contributing to the open source. Watching the creation of new model architectures that pushed the state of the art in multiple areas.

I saw the team spin magic from nothing again and again. And I was very privileged to be within the walls. I’m very proud of what was accomplished, and am so excited for what lies ahead.

So congratulations to AMD for entering into an agreement with the leading spatial intelligence frontier lab. And congratulations to the World Labs team on a partner that has the vision, ambition and leadership to be the top AI technology provider globally.

Also congratulations to Dr. Su and Dr. Li. Two world class CEOs with a common vision. The both of you working together is unimaginably legendary. Arguably the smartest leaders in tech with the shared goal of building the world's leading AI capabilities. I know you both share an optimistic view of AIs ability to aid humanity. We need far more of that.

As everyone knows. I’m World Lab’s biggest fan. And will remain so. Thanks to @drfeifei , @BenMildenhall , @jcjohnss and the entire team for letting me tag along. What a crazy fucking ride. You stood at the frontier, and moved it. And will continue to. Again, many congratulations to everyone involved. The future of AI will be so much brighter with this partnership. I can’t wait to see where it leads. Here’s to new worlds!

Google Calendar sometimes blows my mind. If an invitation to an event is classified as Spam:
1. It is removed from Inbox and filed as Spam ✅
2. The calendar shows it as a valid invitation 🥶
Why?

Relace is now also the cheapest provider of DeepSeek v4.1 Flash on OpenRouter.

Agent traces are 96%+ input tokens, so GPU utilization is dominated by prefill time. However, most of those tokens are not relevant for the next response.

The encoder/decoder split allows you to use a lossier, cheap submodel for prefill without affecting the performance of decode (i.e. quality of responses).

It also means you need to shuttle KV between GPUs a lot, which is why they redesigned attention (again) and made the KV 4x smaller.

Fully taking advantage of the theoretical gains is a deep engineering problem that DeepSeek left as an exercise for the reader.

Ten years in VC and I'm still having new experiences - like someone joining a Zoom while FLYING a plane.

Never a dull day at @a16z infra, thanks to @Starlink for powering @appenz 🫡

Fun fact: I started the SOC 2 process well before we got into speedrun!

I knew that if people were going to trust us with their conversations, we needed to take that responsibility seriously from day one.

A huge thank you to the team for all the work behind this, and to everyone who’s put their trust in us 💙

We just crossed 100k downloads of OpenWhispr! 🤯

This feels like a good time for a reminder of why we’re building it.

Your ideas and conversations are becoming more valuable, while software is becoming easier to build than ever.

But that creates some worrying incentives for existing software companies: use your proprietary data to train better AI models to stay competitive, and lock that data behind walled gardens to keep you from leaving.

We think that’s pretty shitty. You should stay because a product is useful, not because your data is stuck there.

If billions of people are going to feel comfortable sharing their most private information when talking to AI, and organizations are going to trust it with their work, we have to earn that trust.
For us, that starts with being fully transparent about how your data is handled, and giving you full control over it.

That’s what we’re building with OpenWhispr. You can run models on your own device, use your own cloud provider, or use our cloud service. We’re not anti-cloud. We just think it should be your choice.

We’re still super early, but I’m genuinely excited to bring you along for more of this. This is the first in a series of videos sharing the new features we’re building, what we’re figuring out, and the team behind it.

And if you’re still here reading, we’re officially hiring for two really important roles:

- Founding Engineering Lead
- Social / Brand / Growth Creator

You can find more info about both on our website!

I hereby declare the "learn to code" era officially dead:

Big declines in the number of people studying computer science in the last year or two 📉
