People underestimate how efficient, business-minded mothers can be.

Karen’s day starts before 7am and doesn’t really stop. School runs, client sessions, content creation, dinner, homework… and then doing it all again the next day.

For many parents and primary caregivers, building something of their own isn’t just ambition.
It’s about creating a way of working that actually fits around real life.

But it shouldn’t have to be that hard - or that lonely.

That’s why The Open University created free return-to-work toolkits, designed to support parents and caregivers at every stage of their journey - whether you’re returning, retraining, or rethinking what work looks like.

60 years ago today, Jennie Lee set out a bold vision in her University of the Air White Paper that would become The Open University 🎓

From that moment, the idea of a University that welcomes everyone, whatever their background, began to take shape. Since then, millions of life changing journeys have started with the OU and we are just getting started.

As we celebrate 60 years of open learning, we remain committed to making education accessible to every community and every stage of life.
