So you have this woman in charge of the American Psychological Association, Rouse over at the American Anthropological Association, etc. It’s just not tenable to claim this stuff is minor or a right wing fever dream when these people keep getting put in charge of major orgs.

Three years ago today, the world witnessed the deadliest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Families were torn apart, children kidnapped, women assaulted, and the elderly slaughtered: some 809 civilians were killed, while 252 would endure captivity as hostages.

In January, the last body of the hostages killed was finally returned following the return of the last living hostage last year. The return offered some closure to the conflict as the last body was laid to rest, but we know the scourge of antisemitism is not over.

The hatred that fueled October 7th did not remain on foreign shores. Right here in Canada, far too many synagogues, Jewish businesses and institutions have been the targets of harassment and hate.

This is not, and cannot become, normal. Conservatives will always fight against antisemitism and all forms of hatred: protecting our schools, communities and places of worship so that Canadians of all faiths can live in peace and security.

Today, alongside our Jewish friends and neighbours, we remember those who lost their lives that day. May their memory be a blessing.

This year I invested in pumpkins.

And bang! That's when I'll cash in...

Michaelmas, on 29 September, is not only an important festival in the church year but in England also historically the autumn quarter-day. It marked a moment of transition: the shift from the harvest season into later autumn, the start of new contracts and new school terms.

One thing that makes me sad about the deaths of Wendell Berry and Annie Dillard is that the deeply literate culture that allowed us all to know and love them simply no longer exists at scale, and so we will not, together, see their like again, at least not for many, many years.

“One of the few things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time.”

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
