Two in three Americans are cutting back, and they’re doing it in three very different ways.

🔻 34% are reactive, spending less, saving less and cutting everyday purchases.
🧰 21% are proactive, leaning on more financial tools to manage costs.
⚖️ 45% are balanced, holding their spending steady or increasing it.

Behavior can split a generation more sharply than age. Among baby boomers and seniors, 69% of reactive consumers call daily living costs a challenge, compared with 38% of balanced consumers.

61% of consumers would take an AI agent’s recommendation on credit or pay later. Only 2% would let the agent decide on its own, according to joint research from Splitit and PYMNTS Intelligence.

“The starting point will be ‘surface me the offer, I’ll make the decision,’” says Nandan Sheth, CEO of Splitit.

A year ago, email beat text as the way scams first reached victims by about 10 percentage points. Now the difference is less than 1.5.

First contact by text rose 35% to 12% of scam victims, while email fell 30% to 13%. Banks can't see the text that convinces a customer to send money. They can see the payment that follows.
