Closing out keynotes at Open Source Summit Europe, a fireside chat between Linux and Git founder @Linus__Torvalds and Head of @Ericsson Software Technology Dirk Hohndel. The pair looked back on 35 years of Linux, the philosophy around the kernel, and how programming is evolving in the age of AI. #OSSummit

"You cannot successfully plan a transformation you cannot see the shape of. And you cannot properly govern what you do not oversee.”

Juliette van der Laarse, creator of the AI Flower, made the case for an open capability architecture for AI-era engineering that the whole community can build on, test, and challenge – instead of thousands private efforts.

Munich is doubling down on open source.

In her keynote at #OSSummit, Dr. Laura Dornheim, Chief Digital Officer at @StadtMuenchen, demonstrated how the city makes open source the default wherever possible. Munich publishes its own code, sponsors open source projects, and offers its public servants a self-hosted, GDPR-compliant AI assistant.

She shares that, to make true progress with open source in the public sector, it is essential to speak the language of tech and politics.

Open source is where AI systems are built, and the lessons from cloud native are carrying over.

Ryan Waite, Director of Open Source Ecosystems and Incubations at @Microsoft, shared how building on open source creates a learning loop across every layer of the stack, and how open, shared tooling helps teams meet EU Cyber Resilience Act requirements.

“AI is writing a lot of your software. Make sure it’s building on a good foundation.”

At #OSSummit in Prague, @valkey_io maintainer Madelyn Olson explained why open governance matters when AI is choosing your infrastructure. Her advice: ensure your AI is building with stable, open source context and always contribute back upstream. @awscloud

Today is the final day of Open Source Summit Europe 2026 and keynotes are kicking off. Join us for highlights, including a fireside chat with Linux founder @Linus__Torvalds and Head of Ericsson Software Technology, @dirkhh_cf.

How are AI and digital sovereignty reshaping open source governance in Europe?

The 5th annual State of Open Source in Europe report by the Linux Foundation finds 94% of European organizations call digital sovereignty a strategic priority, and 76% say AI tools help them get more value from the open source they already use. Advanced governance returns 4.6x ROI vs. 3.6x for no formal governance.

As AI becomes part of the operating system, #Linux distributions need to connect model capabilities with real system functions.

At #OSSummit, Liu Min, executive director of @openKylin, shared the project's approach to reusable AI infrastructure and system agents that can interact with the desktop.

Strengthen the Foundation. Grow the Ecosystem.

More AI-generated vulnerability reports mean more triage for maintainers, and AI-generated patches can introduce regressions that only experienced reviewers catch.

@IBM Chief Client Innovation Officer of Enterprise Security, Jamie Thomas @tjamieibm shared how @openssf security tools and shared standards, alongside Akrites’ incident response support, can help projects prioritize real vulnerabilities and get fixes upstream.

Her call to action: “It’s our responsibility as organizations to start contributing these remediations upstream in open source.”

#OSSummit

As AI workloads scale across multiple nodes, operating systems need to evolve alongside them.

Xinwei Hu, Chairman of @openEuler Technical Committee shared his vision for how how open source infrastructure can support the next generation of AI systems.

AI-native operating systems that combine supernode infrastructure with intelligent agent orchestration makes distributed AI workloads easier to manage, improves performance and gives AI agents a secure, isolated environment to explore, execute, and verify solutions.

Nearly 50,000 CVEs were tracked last year. How can developers keep applications secure when manual patching can't keep pace?

N. Harrison Ripps, Director of Engineering at @redhatopen shared how its open source Hardened Images automate vulnerability fixes, rebuilds, and image publishing.

With minimal, distroless containers and a supply chain that continuously delivers updates, developers can reduce their attack surface and spend less time managing security patches and more time building applications.
