Sweet new benchmark from Surge looking at how close AI is getting to a staff-level software engineering. We're half-way there.
echen@echen · Oct 8introducing sudo L7, our new benchmark for staff-level software engineering.
coding agents are getting very good at being L3s. give them a well-defined ticket and they can write excellent code.
but a staff engineer is valuable for everything that happens around the code.
what should we build? what already exists? what's going to break in prod? what did the tests miss? should we even be doing this?
sudo L7 has 60 tasks, mostly in private production repos from real companies, written by engineers who've actually owned these systems.
expert rubrics grade everything from functional correctness to engineering craft, architectural judgment, thought partnership, and unnecessary complexity.
the best agents succeed on only ~45% of tasks.
coding is only part of the job. for now, we're keeping them at idiot genius L3.

Been loving this app. Great work @benspringwater.
Ben Springwater@benspringwater · Oct 8I'm delighted to introduce Sundrop – a private photo app for parents. trysundrop.app ☀️
Sundrop finds your best photos and turns them into delightful keepsakes.
See your kids side-by-side at the same age. Watch timelapses of them growing up. Relive your family's week. And lots more.
Everything happens on your iPhone; your photos never touch our servers. (We wouldn't trust a company with our photo libraries, either.)
Sundrop has brought a lot of joy to our own families. We hope it does the same for yours!

“If we truly believe that AI is changing how we work, then ICs should get paid more than managers, because an IC can drive more impact than a manager could in the pre-AI system.” — @ElenaVerna

Linear CEO @karrisaarinen: "Making products produces two things: the product, and the learning.
The effort you put into building and designing things teaches you something about what the problem is, what the customers want.
We're in this time now that there's this danger of losing that direct connection with the learning."

One of my favorite PM use cases for Claude is asking "who used <feature> the most last week? make me a artifact of the top 10 by usage, then reach out and schedule 15 min to chat." It's the fastest way to get user feedback!

Linear CEO @karrisaarinen: "I took a break this summer from paying attention to AI. I thought that when I came back, I'd feel left behind. But when I came back, I realized that nothing has really changed.
There's new models, there's new techniques, there's new agents. But in the end, making great products, increasing revenue, and building the business—it's still hard.
It's clear the tools are getting better, you can do more, you can do it faster. But I think the more important question is: are we actually making better things with these tools? Are our teams getting better with these tools?
I don't think that answer is clearly yes.
There's a lot of emphasis now on toolmaking and using tools and building systems. But I think in the end, as product people, our job is to make something great."

Trend I'm following: Teams using AI "simulations" to quickly test product ideas and flow tweaks.
Products like @simile_ai, @primitivelabsai, @syntheticusers, trytenera.ai, Seldon.com, and others.
If you've tried something like this, how'd it go?

Grant Lee@thisisgrantlee · Oct 6Everyone is sick of generic AI, including us.
Gamma was the first AI presentation platform to reach real scale. But now that AI tools are everywhere, everything looks the same.
Earlier this summer, we came to an uncomfortable conclusion: without a step change in visual variety, Gamma’s output would look and feel too similar to all the other AI tools. The entire point of a presentation is to help someone "get" your idea, to see it as unique and do something with it.
We started over. Today we're shipping Gamma 5, the biggest product overhaul in our company's history.
We rebuilt Gamma to create presentations that actually look like you and your brand. Your teams can design anything they dream up, following your brand's aesthetic or something entirely new, with every frontier and image model under the hood. And the same goes for your docs, social assets, and graphics.
We revamped our agent, design tools, editing, import, export, connectors, and more.
Get your ideas out there.
