NASA Mars

Media are invited to join NASA for a teleconference at 4 p.m. EDT, Thursday, Oct. 15, to preview the agency’s contributions to @JAXA_en's Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission, which will explore the Red Planet's moons and return a sample of Phobos.

A journey to the depths of ancient Mars?

Perseverance is exploring a field of light-toned rocks, which are an unusual sight on Mars, a planet dominated by dark-colored basaltic stones. This piqued the team’s interest. What are they? How did they get here?  ½

The Space Apps Challenge is NASA's annual hackathon for anyone with an interest in space to address real-world challenges. This year, there are several Red Planet-related projects. It's a great chance to get involved with Mars science, engineering, storytelling, and more!

📍Gale Crater, Aug. 11, 2026, 8:30 a.m. local Mars time.

The Curiosity rover captures the Sun rising on crags known as yardangs, a scene that scientists have long been waiting to see up close. 1/2

This storm occurred near the location of our Opportunity rover. Such storms sometimes presented challenges for the solar-powered explorer. In 2007, Opportunity captured images of the sky during a separate dust storm, seen here.

Layered beauty 😍

The Arabia Terra region on Mars has deposits that preserve a record of the planet’s ancient climate. The rhythmic nature of the layers could be due to cyclic processes, such as dust storms, perhaps involving groundwater. 1/2

Sometimes following the water can lead to surprising places💧

A new study of data from Perseverance reveals that rocks in Jezero Crater were shaped by a complex sequence of ancient lakes, groundwater systems, and hydrothermal fluids. 1/2

Sunrise, sunset 🏜️

To mark Curiosity’s 5,000th Martian day on the Red Planet, the rover’s team created this postcard. It combines two panoramas, with blue colors representing images taken in the morning, and yellow colors for the images taken at dusk. 1/2

The Curiosity rover has now been exploring the surface of Mars for more than 5000 Martian days! Each day on Mars, or "sol," is about 24.6 hours long.

How did Curiosity and its team mark the occasion? By working, of course. 🪏 1/2

Running up that hill!

Today, NASA’s Curiosity rover reached the pinnacle — so far — of its 14-year mission on Mars, when it marked an elevation gain of 1 kilometer in its ongoing journey from Gale Crater up the slope of Mount Sharp. 1/2

Let's go to Mars!
NASA contributed a gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer instrument to the MMX mission, which will explore Mars’ moons Phobos and Deimos and deliver a sample from Phobos to Earth.

On Earth, solar eclipses happen when the Moon passes in front of the Sun as seen from the ground. On Mars, sometimes one of its moons does the same thing…but they’re too small to fully cover the Sun’s disc. Perseverance captured this look at Phobos transiting the Sun in 2024.

SkyFall is already taking flight, at least in the lab.

Stargazing …or rather, Earthgazing… on Mars! 🌏🔭

Perseverance watched as Earth vanished behind the moon Phobos in the evening sky. This is the first time humanity has made an observation from the surface of another planet showing Earth disappearing behind a celestial body.

In its 14 years on Mars, the Curiosity rover has taken more than 700,000 images, but this one is special – because it was one of the first.

Happy landiversary, Curiosity!

We're taking your questions now! redd.it/1vfxsjp

Our spacecraft have been on the surface and in the skies of Mars for more than 50 years. What would you ask NASA Mars scientists about the past, present, and future of exploration?

Join us on Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 11:00am-12:30pm PT for a @Reddit AMA: reddit.com/r/askscience/

Curiosity has delivered a new 360-degree panorama from Mars. “We’ve seen a lot of fascinating landscapes through Curiosity’s eyes, but this sea of polygons took our breath away,” said the mission’s project scientist. 1/2

When the twin ESCAPADE spacecraft arrive at Mars in September 2027, they will study how the solar wind interacts with the Martian environment and how that drives atmospheric loss at the Red Planet. science.nasa.gov/mission/escapa…
