DAVINCI proves it can stand the heat 🔥

To prepare for its descent through Venus’ scorching atmosphere, a model of the DAVINCI probe was heated to 869 degrees Fahrenheit (465 degrees Celsius) six different times. It passed every test unscathed.

Meteor leftovers are causing trouble 📻

High above Earth, meteors vaporize into metal particles that clump into clouds and disrupt radio signals. NASA’s SpEED Demon sounding rocket flew through one, releasing four probes inside to reveal its structure.

Dr. Robert Goddard, born OTD in 1882, is remembered as a pioneer of modern rocketry who not only theorized, but built and tested his inventions. His work on multi-stage, liquid-fueled, and steerable rocket concepts laid the groundwork for today's space vehicles.

Our @NASAGoddard center in Maryland is named in his honor.

Let's reflect...

Albedo is a measure of how much light and heat a surface reflects. Lighter objects tend to have higher albedo, and darker objects have lower. This reflectivity plays an important role in studying the makeup of the surface of bodies like the Moon.

Ready to shake things up!

The LEMS-SP instrument was chosen to fly to the Moon with the CLPS program, with Goddard helping lead the team. LEMS-SP will use a seismometer to monitor micrometeoroids & the abundance of volatiles that drift into the Moon’s thin outer layer of gases.

A new window to the universe is opening 🌌

Meet PRIMA, the first in NASA’s new class of Probe Explorer missions, filling the gap between flagship missions and smaller projects. The mission will be managed by @NASAJPL, with Goddard as a partner.

Beam me up… to California 🖖

Vasquez Rocks served as the backdrop for alien worlds in Star Trek. Formed from millions of years of erosion, these jagged rocks are located on Earth. Landsat 9 captured a view of these otherworldly formations from space.

A small fry making jumbo waves 🌊

@NASAWebb spotted the tiniest brown dwarfs ever in nebula IC 348, some just twice Jupiter’s mass. These objects are between planets and stars in mass, but this result has scientists questioning just how small they can really get.

Arctic sea ice grows and melts with the seasons, reaching an annual minimum extent at the end of summer in the northern hemisphere. On Sept. 12, Arctic sea ice reached its annual minimum extent, tying for the 10th lowest in the satellite record.

Get ready to wave to an asteroid 👋🪨

In 2029, asteroid Apophis will swing by Earth, passing safely about 20,000 miles from the surface. The OSIRIS-APEX mission will meet up with the asteroid shortly after, to map the surface and study its chemical makeup.

Some fall for your feed 🍂

Ready to bundle up with some flannel and enjoy a hot cider? Or maybe your fall plans are more horror movies and haunted houses. Either way, we've got you covered! Enjoy some curated autumn vibes from space and Earth.

Saturn's famous hexagon now has a sibling 🪐

First spotted decades ago, the six-sided vortex at Saturn's north pole fascinated scientists. Now, @NASAHubble caught a glimpse of an evolving ten-sided atmospheric wave on the ringed planet's south pole.

Tiny objects, big history 🪨

Some of the solar system's smallest objects remember how they were made. @NASAHubble & @NASAWebb teamed up to study the ancient origins of these miniature worlds beyond Neptune.

New crater, who's this?

Researchers just found the largest newly formed impact crater in the solar system on the Moon. It's a once in a century find made possible by NASA's LRO, which has been orbiting the Moon for 17 years.

Back in action! 📡
NASA's Guam Remote Station is back online after Typhoon Mawar damaged the site in 2023. Its return restores full coverage for Goddard’s Near Space Network, helping missions send critical science and exploration data back to Earth.

A hometown visit for two members of the @NASAArtemis II crew!

Maryland native @astro_reid joined us at Goddard for a discussion of lunar science, a tour of some of our future missions, and to see the center where his pal Rise was fabricated.
