I believe parents have a responsibility to play their part in ensuring young people don't turn to crime.
Our Parenting Orders policy understands this.
It will ensure that when a young person is getting into trouble, the state will intervene rigorously in an attempt to support them and ensure they pick a different path.
But it is not merely government, and the third-sector, that must step in.
Parents have a critical role too.
The vast majority of parents want to engage with services, and many will need support and help with their child who is getting into trouble.
But others, when they are not playing their part, will need to appreciate that decision comes with consequences too.
That is, in my view, what society expects.
