Atmospheric Measurement & Observation Facility

Our Weybourne Observatory is part of the Integrated Carbon Observation System that collects greenhouse gas data.

@ICOS_RI data is used by scientists, governments, and international organisations for climate action.

Interested in the future of airborne atmospheric research? Involved in new measurement tech or more sustainable ways to make observations?

24 Aug is the last chance to sign up to the @AtmosScience @faam146 Sustainable Airborne Research & Atmospheric Science event on 12 Sept.

Last month our Optical Particle Counter was used to measure the concentration of airborne particulate matter in Montserrat.

Particles less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter (known as PM2.5) can consist of a variety of chemicals and materials, which may impact people's health.

The upgrade team @faam146 is accepting applications for project ideas relating to aircraft, scientific infrastructure, scientific instrumentation, processes and operations, and resource developments.

Join them at 1pm today for a webinar about the application process 👇

An exciting opportunity to communicate about how we monitor climate change, hazardous weather, and air pollution - especially using our scientific labs and observatories!

Meet the new @AtmosScience X-band radar!

We're installing and testing it over the next couple of weeks. Really looking forward to using it this summer for some research campaigns with @MetOffice_Sci 📡

Researchers from @AtmosScience and @AtmosChemYork use the BT Tower Observatory to detect how air pollution levels change over time.

Recent work shows that nitrogen dioxide emissions, one of the most harmful air pollutants for our health, reduced by over 70% between 2017 - 2021.

Check out these dishy photos taken at our Chilbolton Atmospheric Observatory 👀

Last week, we welcomed @Cambridge_Uni students to our Chilbolton Atmospheric Observatory for a field trip.

We showed them around the site as part of the @CamUniGeography course: From Earth Observations to the Climate System.

A team of @AtmosScience and @UK_CEH researchers have assessed precipitation data from our X-band radar in Northern Scotland.

They found the mobile radar can help to fill gaps in the stationary radar network, and boost hydrological model performance.

Professor @IanMBrooks has found a fantastic deployment location onboard the Sir David Attenborough for our doppler lidar 😍

We can't wait to see how the campaign goes.

We caught our first sighting of noctilucent clouds for this season at the Chilbolton Atmospheric Observatory on Sunday.

Noctilucent clouds are a seasonal wonder of the natural world. You can find out when to spot them by visiting our instrument page ⤵️

It's brilliant to see our 30m measurement mast deployed on arctic ice as part of @MOSAiCArctic expedition, helping to understand the global consequences of Arctic change.

Although, admittedly our kit does look a little lonely this Christmas ☃️

We're trying to make it even easier for scientists to access our kit.

Simply tell us what you're looking to measure, and we'll show you what we've got 😀

This is a new way to browse our catalogue. Try it out! ⤵️

We're keeping our MST Radar facility open for as long as possible to help weather forecasters 🌤️🌧️

These measurements have become more important now that aircraft observations have been dramatically reduced.

Last year, we shipped kit to Arctic on board the RV Polarstern, supporting the UK contribution to @MOSAiCArctic.

Our kit will help Prof. @IanMBrooks to study the boundary layer - the part of the atmosphere closest to the earth's surface.
