Col. Stephen Pituch, 403rd Operations Group commander and pilot, flies through the eye of Hurricane Nolo while supporting the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron’s mission to collect critical meteorological data from inside the storm.

Known as the Air Force Reserve “Hurricane Hunters,” the 53rd WRS flies directly into tropical systems to gather atmospheric data that would otherwise be unavailable. That information is transmitted to the National Hurricane Center, where forecasters use it to improve storm analyses and forecasts—helping communities make informed decisions as storms approach.

Our WC-130J crews are collecting critical atmospheric data from inside #HurricaneNolo to support National Hurricane Center forecasts.

We are heading back to the Pacific to investigate an area of interest that could potentially impact the Hawaiian Islands.

Flying aboard the WC-130J Super Hercules, our #HurricaneHunters will collect critical atmospheric data that is transmitted to the National Hurricane Center, where forecasters use it to improve forecasts and provide communities with the information they need to prepare.

From the Gulf Coast to the Central Pacific, the mission remains the same: go where satellites can’t and gather the data forecasters need.

🌊🌀 The 53rd WRS “Hurricane Hunters” and @NAVOCEANO_SSC supported the @USNavyResearch SASCWATCH project by dropping ocean buoys ahead of Hurricane Lowell.

Videos show buoy drops and the red dots show buoy movement as the storm approaches. The buoys measure winds, waves, pressure and sea-surface temperature—revealing how hurricane winds impact waves and modulate hurricane intensity.

Our crews are currently flying Hurricane Lowell in the Pacific, gathering data real-time and sending to the NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center. The crews have seen a max wind speed at 150 knots and 927 milibars for barometric pressure and it shows strengthening.

As Tropical Storm Edouard approached landfall earlier this week, @USAFReserve Hurricane Hunters flew directly into the storm in the early morning hours to collect critical data that helped forecast models keep communities informed. 🌀✈️

Flying through a storm takes resilience. But resilience doesn’t mean facing everything alone.

As we recognize Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, remember that the same is true for the storms we face in our own lives. Sometimes resilience looks like reaching out, checking on a teammate, asking for help, or simply letting someone know, “I’m here.”
