I have no clue how people can have such confidence. Yes, my intuition also says that AI is not conscious, but EVERY FUNCTIONALIST THEORY OF CONSCIOUSNESS INHERENTLY DESCRIBES A PROGRAM, and LLMs EASILY MEET at least some criteria. Is this not common knowledge?

This is likely a property of our epistemology as such. We do not have a principled way to deny consciousness to software that is capable of cognition (LLMs clearly are). Substrate dependence is mere folk intuition. Deal with it and show appropriate humility.
