How to Download Twitter Video on iPhone (Safari, 2026)
Download Twitter video on iPhone with Safari: copy the post link, pick a quality, save from Files to Photos. Plus a Shortcut, GIF tips and troubleshooting.

What you need before you start
The X app has no built-in button to save videos to your camera roll, so on iPhone you need a small detour through Safari. The good news: in 2026 you don't need a special app, a jailbreak or a paid tool. You need:
- An iPhone or iPad running a recent version of iOS or iPadOS (Safari has had a built-in download manager since iOS 13).
- Safari (other browsers work too, but the steps below use Safari).
- The link to a public post that contains a video or GIF.
- Some free storage. A one-minute 1080p clip is often in the tens of megabytes.
This guide uses PeekX, a free, independent viewer and downloader that isn't affiliated with X Corp. It has no sign-up, no ads, no pop-ups and no waiting screens, and the video is downloaded by your browser directly from X's own media servers. Nothing is re-encoded, so you get the same file X serves.
Step by step: download Twitter video on iPhone with Safari
- Copy the post link. In the X app, open the post with the video, tap the Share icon and choose Copy link. (On x.com in Safari, you can also just copy the address bar.)
- Open the downloader in Safari. Go to the Twitter Video Downloader page in Safari.
- Paste the link. Tap the input box, tap Paste. The lookup starts automatically and shows every video, GIF and photo in the post.
- Choose a quality. You'll see each available MP4 quality with its resolution and, where possible, its file size. Pick the highest for the best picture, or a smaller one to save space.
- Confirm the download. Safari may ask whether you want to download the file. Tap Download. A small download arrow appears in the address bar while it saves.
- Find it in Files. Open the Files app → Browse → Downloads (by default this folder is in iCloud Drive; you can change it in Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads, or Settings → Safari on older iOS versions).
- Save it to Photos. Tap the video to open it, tap the Share icon and choose Save Video. It now appears in the Photos app like any other clip.
You can also tap the download arrow in Safari's address bar, then tap the file to open it and save it to Photos from there. It skips the trip to the Files app.
Want a shortcut for links? PeekX URLs mirror x.com. Replace x.com in any post link with the PeekX domain, keep the rest, and the same post opens with download buttons.
Faster: a Shortcut that opens posts from the X app
If you save videos often, a simple Shortcut saves you the copy-and-paste step. It doesn't download anything by itself; it just sends the post you're looking at to PeekX, where you pick the quality.
- Open the Shortcuts app and create a new shortcut.
- In its details, turn on Show in Share Sheet and set it to accept URLs.
- Add a Replace Text action that replaces x.com or twitter.com with the PeekX domain (turn on Regular Expression to match both).
- Add an Open URLs action.
- In the X app, tap Share → Share via… on a post and choose your shortcut. The post opens in Safari on PeekX.
The exact text to paste is on the bookmarklet page, which also has a one-tap bookmarklet for when you're browsing x.com in Safari.
Which quality should you choose?
X stores several MP4 versions of each video. Which ones exist depends on what was uploaded: a clip filmed in 720p will never have a 1080p version, and some older or very short videos only come in small sizes.
| Typical quality | Best for | Rough size |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p (when uploaded) | Keeping a sharp copy, watching on a big screen | Largest; can be tens of MB per minute |
| 720p | A good balance for watching on your phone | Medium |
| 480p / 360p and below | Sending in messaging apps, saving space or data | Smallest |
Sizes vary a lot with length and content, so check the file size PeekX shows next to each option before you tap. On cellular data, a smaller version saves your data plan; on Wi-Fi, grab the biggest one.
A note on sound and length: the download keeps the original audio track, and long videos simply produce bigger files. If a long clip seems stuck, it is usually still downloading, so give it a moment on a slow connection before trying again.
If you want the file for editing or for another app, the Twitter to MP4 page explains the formats in more detail. Every download is already a standard MP4 that plays in Photos, iMovie and most editors.
Saving GIFs and photos on iPhone
GIFs on X aren't really GIF files. X converts them to short, silent, looping MP4 videos, and that's what you download. On iPhone that's actually handy: the MP4 saves straight to Photos as a video and plays smoothly. Use the Twitter GIF Downloader and follow the same Files → Share → Save Video steps.
For pictures, the Twitter Image Downloader saves photos at their original size instead of the compressed preview. Posts with several images or videos can also be downloaded as one ZIP; on iPhone, tap the ZIP in the Files app to unpack it.
Troubleshooting: when the video won't save
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The video opens in a new tab instead of downloading | The in-browser download didn't complete, so PeekX opened the file from X's server instead | Long-press the video and choose to download it, or tap Share → Save to Files, then save it to Photos |
| "Can't find" or no video shown | The post is from a protected account, was deleted, or is marked sensitive/age-restricted | Protected posts can't be downloaded by any tool. Sensitive posts may not expose media publicly; check the link is right |
| Download stalls or fails halfway | Weak connection, Low Power Mode, or not enough free storage | Switch to Wi-Fi, turn off Low Power Mode, free some space, or pick a lower quality |
| Can't find the file afterwards | Safari saved to a different folder | Check the Downloads folder in both iCloud Drive and On My iPhone in the Files app |
| Lookup is slow or shows a busy message | X is temporarily limiting requests, or a VPN/iCloud Private Relay route is being throttled | Wait a minute and retry; if it keeps failing, try temporarily without the VPN or Private Relay |
One honest limit: if a post or account is protected, no downloader can get it, and any site claiming otherwise is a scam. See can you see private Twitter accounts for why.
Use downloads responsibly
Saving a clip to watch offline or keep for reference is common, but the video still belongs to whoever made it. Ask before re-uploading someone's work, credit the creator, and follow copyright rules where you live. PeekX doesn't keep copies of anything you download, and it never records which posts you looked at.
