I don't think of capitalism as a machine that follows norms. Markets emerge for bad things because some people want bad things. It's hard to blame Pandora for opening the box. This tech gets built by gradient ascent and who gets to the summit first is almost immaterial.

I think we're talking past each other. I'm not talking about capitalism or markets or an abstract Pandora. I'm saying: you, as an individual, have the luxury (I assume, as a SWE)—and the obligation—to choose what you believe it is Good to work on and what not.
